Forwarding Full Email Headers (Office 365)

When investigating email issues, IT may require a copy of the full headers of an email message.  These headers can be needed for issues such as:

  • Phishing or malware
  • Delayed message delivery
  • Harassment or other inappropriate content

A few notes before the actual instructions:

  • The instructions below are for the web version of Office 365.  If you use the desktop version that is part of Microsoft Office normally - we still recommend going into the Outlook Web version to do this.
  • These instructions are for the newer version of Outlook Web Access.  You are using the "Old" Outlook if instead it says "Try the new Outlook" at the top right (If it says this - click "Try the new Outlook" to move to the new version).

Forwarding full email headers

  1. Open the email in question
  2. At the top right of the message, click the three dots (next to the forward/reply buttons).  This brings up more options.
  3. Choose View message details near the bottom
  4. The message details window will come up (it might take a moment).  Highlight the content in the window
  5. Copy the content (To Copy: CTRL + C on Windows, Command + C on Mac)
  6. Paste the copied content into your email reply to IT (To Paste: CTRL + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac)
