NP Hawks WPA Wireless Setup (Windows 7)

This is a one-time process that will allow your device to automatically connect to the NP Hawks WPA network whenever it is within range.

Normally connecting to the wireless network is done in 3 easy steps:

  1. Click on the wireless icon on the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Select "NP Hawks WPA" network.
  3. Enter your NP Username and Password.
  4. You may be shown a warning that "The credentials provided by the server could not be validated". If so click the Connect button.

 


 

If the above does not work for you then you will need to manually setup the connection by using the following steps.

Make sure to select all settings and to input information exactly as described on this page; failing to select a setting or selecting additional settings will prevent you from accessing the network.

Please Note: some laptops have a physical on/off switch that controls the wireless connection; if this applies to your laptop, be sure that the switch is set to “On.” 

 

Click the Start menu and then click Control Panel.

 

 

In the Control Panel click on Network and Sharing Center. If you don't see Network and Sharing Center look for Network and Internet and click View network status and tasks.

 

 

On the left hand side bar click Manage wireless networks.

 

 

On the screen for Manage Wireless Networks click Add.

 

 

When asked "How yo you want to add a network?" click "Manually create a network profile".

 

 

On the screen for Enter information for the wireless network you want to add" enter the following information:

Network name: "NP Hawks WPA" (without quotes)

Security type: WPA2-Enterprise

Encryption type: AES

Security Key: <leave this blank>

Start this connection automatically should be checked. Connect even if this network is not broadcasting should NOT be checked. Click the Next button to continue.

 

 

When informed that you have "Successfully added NP Hawks WPA" click Change connection settings.

 

 

On the NP Hawks WPA Wireless Network Properties window click on the Security tab.

 

 

On the Security tab confirm the settings are as follows:

Security type: WPA2-Enterprise

Encryption type: AES

Choose a network connection method: Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)

Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged in should be checked.

To continue click the Settings button next to Microsoft: Protocol EAP (PEAP).

 

On the Protected EAP Properties confirm the settings are as follows:

Validate server certificate should be checked

Connect to these servers should be checked and the box immediately following this option should contain radius.newpaltz.edu

In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities box make sure both AddTrust External CA Root and Comodo CA are checked. No other options in this box should be checked.

Select Authentication Method should be set to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).

Enable Fast Reconnect should be checked. The three checkboxes following it should all be unchecked.

Click the Configure button next to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) to continue.

 

 

On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window make sure the checkbox for Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) is NOT checked and click the OK button.

 

Click the OK button on the Protected EAP Properties window.

 

 

Click the Advanced settings button on the NP Hawks WPA Wireless Network Properties window that you've been returned to.

 

 

On the Advanced settings window make sure Specify authentication mode checkbox is checked. Immediately under it select User authentication in the pull down list. Then click the Save credentials button.

 

 

You will now be asked to enter your username and password for your SUNY New Paltz account used on my.newpaltz.edu and other campus services. Make sure for Username you enter your SUNY New Paltz Username and NOT your email address. Click the OK button to continue.

 

 

You should be returned to the Advanced settings window. Click the OK button to continue.

 

 

You should now be returned to the NP Hawks WPA Wireless Network Properties window. Click OK to continue.

 

 

You should now see the window for Manually connect to a wireless network. Click the Close button to complete configuration.

 

 

You should now be connected to the NP Hawks WPA wireless network.
