Grades
The Grades area is a reflection of the instructor-controlled Grade area that the faculty build. Some columns will be automatically added when assignments and assessments are created, while others can be created manually. The order and availability of columns in the Grades area is also controlled through the Grade Area.
There are two ways to determine a final grade through the Brightspace Grade Center: Total Points Column or Weighted Total Points Column. Making a determination on what type of Grading Scheme you will select will help you plan and organize your entire grade center.
Total Points
When you use Total Points calculations, all other graded columns will be cumulatively added in the Final Calculated Grade Column. If point values add up to 100, you can use the final points total as both the score and the total grade percentage. If points exceed 100, you will need to either set this column to show as a percentage or have a separate column for the final grade where the percentage is calculated.
Weighted Total Points Column
When using Weighted Total calculations, it works best when all assignments are graded out of 100%. Related assignments or assessments that will be weighted together will utilize "categories" in order to average those columns together before assigning that average a percentage of the total grade.
The Brightspace Grade tool
A grade book contains your grading system, grade calculations, grade scheme, grade items, and view and display options. Grade items in your grade book represent all the work that you want to evaluate users on in a course. You can evaluate specific tasks such as assignments, tests, and participation, and you can also create grade items and associate them with course objects such as assignments and quizzes.
