Linking Externally

There are lots of great resources available on the internet and linking out to these resources is often a great idea.  Linking to outside resources can save time by adding quality content made by other providers, who might have different perspectives or world views.  There are, however, a few caveats that you should consider when including web content:

  • Is your link accessible?

  • Is the content and/or website, itself, accessible?  We are required to link only to accessible content or sites.

  • Is the content likely to remain available?  If a site or resource is deleted, do you have a backup plan to replace it?

  • Is the content being posted legally?  It's convenient when we find the material we want online and technically we're not breaking rules to link to it, but is it ethical to use the content we know is posted in violation of copyright?  Additionally, this point often circles back to the above point - will this content remain available?

As long as the site or content to which you want to link meets the above requirements, it is quick and easy to curate useful content for your students.

Linking Internally

When browsing in Lessons, a unique URL is assigned to each unit, module, topic, and lesson. This allows instructors to link to a specific location in Lessons without learners having to navigate to the item manually. This is important to remember so that you are housing resources in one area and linking back to them for a reminder.  This eliminates the possibility of having duplicate documents with conflicting information or dates.
