Overview:

Mailman is the SUNY New Paltz mailing list (aka listserv) system.  It is used for both internal and external mass communication.

  • Mailman can be used for:
    • communicating with students, faculty, and staff
    • creating discussion lists for internal or external groups
  • Mailing list subscribers can be added in the following ways (not all lists allow all methods):
    • automatically based on a certain criteria (i.e. all students)
    • manually by a list administrator/moderator
    • self-service (by subscribers emailing the listname-subscribe@newpaltz.edu

Authorized Users:

  • Faculty
  • Students
  • Staff
  • External individuals (for some lists)

Establishing a mailing list:

A mailing list can be in one of the following categories:

  • Academic discussion lists: For Academic discussion mailing lists, the content must reasonably reflect the field of expertise, research, or study of the list sponsor as it relates to their function at the university. In cases where this is in doubt, the signature of the sponsor’s department chair/director may be required to accompany a list application as confirmation that the purpose of the list is legitimate.

  • Organization or group lists: For Organization or group mailing lists, the group must be a recognized department, organization, or program on this campus. All union/labor related mailing lists must be approved by the Human Resources Department.

  • Notification lists: These are lists that include all individuals in a certain criteria (all students, all faculty/staff, etc.)
