Blocked and Safe Senders lists

Microsoft 365 Blocked and Safe Senders Lists

Microsoft 365 allows users to add senders or domains to their blocked or safe senders lists.  These lists will - regardless of whether a message is marked as Junk or Not Junk by Microsoft 365, force messages to go into your Inbox (for the Safe Senders list) or your Junk folder (for the Blocked Senders list).

  1. Open the full Outlook settings by clicking the gear icon at the top right
  2. Click on "Junk email" on the left
  3. Near the bottom you'll see two tabs - Safe senders and domains and Blocked senders and domains.
  4. Any mail from senders in Blocked Senders and domains will be placed in your Junk Email folder.  Any mail from someone in Safe senders or domains will not be marked as Junk.
  5. If you're looking to add to one of those lists: Click Add safe sender to add a safe/allowed sender, or click on the Blocked senders and domains tab and click Add blocked sender
  6. To remove an address from either the "Blocked senders and domains" or "Safe senders and domains" list, scroll through the appropriate list until you find the address (or use the search box) and then click the trash can icon next to the address/domain you want to remove.

Warning: These settings override any rules set by ITS to allow or block external senders - so you should be cautious about adding addresses to these lists.  Even if a message is detected as having fraudulent content - adding a sender to your safe senders list will allow those messages to come through.  Likewise, even if the sender is a legitimate message authorized by the university - if you add it to your blocked senders list, it will mark mail from that sender as Junk.
