Proctoring

Notice:

Proctoring Notice:

We encourage faculty to consider appropriate alternatives to proctoring since proctoring presents a number of challenges. Sometimes, of course, proctoring is the most appropriate testing approach, and in those cases, we have proctoring guidelines for use of our approved proctoring service, Respondus Lock Down Browser, as well as an accompanying proctoring monitoring package available through Respondus Monitor. Please reach out to The Office of Instructional Technology if you have questions about proctoring and the use of these products.  Do not make use of any other proctoring services or products without pre-approval of the Associate Provost for Academic Planning & Learning Innovation/Dean of Continuing & Online Education.

Please notes these important points:

  • If your course requires either Respondus Lock Down Browser or Respondus Monitor for assessments, please give students prior notice by indicating the requirement(s) in the notes in the course schedule and by including the information in the course syllabus.  For privacy reasons, some students object to monitoring software on their computers or cameras observing them, and, as a result, they should be able to make an informed choice about enrolling in a course with those requirements.  Moreover, although Respondus Lock Down Browser is available at no cost, there is a cost to students for Respondus Monitor, and students should be aware of the additional cost before they begin the course.
  • If a course is listed as a Synchronous Online or Combined Online course in The Schedule of Classes, students are not required to come to campus to take exams, quizzes, or tests. If assessments require proctoring, please use the approved proctoring tool(s).
  • If a course is listed as Hybrid in The Schedule of Classes, the seated sections cannot be used solely for exam proctoring purposes.   However, if there is significant face-to-face instruction in the Hybrid course, then it is permissible to also have face-to-face assessments.

Respondus:

SUNY New Paltz offers free access to Respondus LockDown Browser, but not Respondus Monitor. More information on Respondus can be found here.
