Forwarding Office 365 email to an external account

Before following these instructions, please see the following:

  • These instructions are for students only - not for faculty and staff.  Faculty and staff should not forward their official college email account to an external address.
  • Even for students, we recommend you use your college email account directly and do not forward it to an external address.  If you do so - we cannot guarantee reliability for your external email and are not responsible for mail not delivered or marked as spam on your external email.
  • If you were a student before December 1st, 2020, your Office 365 account was setup to forward to your Hawkmail account.
  • The college is planning on making Office 365 the default email system for existing students as of June 2021.  At that time, Hawkmail accounts for active students who still have Hawkmail will be set to forward to their Office 365 account.

That being said, if you are a student at the college and want to forward your Office 365 email you can do so as follows:

  1. Access your Office 365 account via outlook.newpaltz.edu.
  2. Once logged in, click the settings icon at the top right (it looks like a gear) then click "View all Outlook settings" button at the bottom (see screenshot below).Screenshot showing the gear icon for settings in Outlook, and the View All Outlook Settings button
  3. Click Forwarding
  4. Click the Enable forwarding box and enter your external email address.
  5. If you want to keep a copy of the messages sent to your @newpaltz.edu address, click the "Keep a copy of forwarded messages" box.
  6. Click Save at the bottom right when done.
